A record/playback apparatus handles a web stored in a single-reel container with one end attached to the reel and the other to the container, and includes means to withdraw a length of web from the container, drive it past a transducer and return it to the container. The container is preferably that of Specification 1,250,696 in which one end of the web is secured to the hinged lid 50 such that when the container is loaded through a retaining door 64 into a compartment 60 and a solenoid 68 is operated a catch is released to allow the lid to spring open and automatically unwind a short length of the web. Vacuum is applied to columns 14 and 16 to withdraw the web as far as a neck in column 14 where a port 76 is situated to clamp the web and thereby cause the remainder to feed into column 16 where it is vacuum-clamped by port 79. A bidirectional capstan 38 feeds the web past a 4-track write and check-read head 41 indexable to 16 positions, and is controlled by photo-sensors (Fig. 9, not shown) detecting transparent portions in the web. After use, the vacuum is shut off and a solenoid 114 operated to extend the shaft 112 of rewind motor 110 into the container to engage clutch plates 116, 58 and return the web to the container, the web automatically closing the lid to reduce contamination. In a modification, the recording surface of the web is internal and the head is movable into and out of the columns to allow loading of the web.</p> |
