PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital recording and reproducing device which satisfactorily reproduces images regardless of the existence of errors in image data. SOLUTION: It is detected whether a PES packet in contents data includes an error, and index data including an error flag showing a detection result are prepared. When contents data are to be reproduced, the index data are referred to so that the PES packet including an error is not reproduced. An I frame flag showing whether the PES packet includes intra-picture coded data and an offset indicating the relative position of the PES packet in the contents data are included in the index data, so that only I frames are reproduced to efficiently perform special reproduction like fast forwarding or fast rewinding.
