PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photographing system capable of obtaining desirable illumination states for various kinds of subjects in order to perform photographing, and to provide an illumination condition setting method. SOLUTION: The photographing system is equipped with an illumination part which illuminates at least a part of a subject and whose illumination condition can be varied, a video acquiring part which acquires the video information of the subject, an illumination decision part which analyzes the illumination state for the subject based on the video information acquired by the video acquiring part and decides the propriety of the illumination state, and an illumination equipment control part which controls an illumination condition based on the result of decision by the illumination decision part. Thus, an inconvenience that the illumination state for the subject suitable for photography is not always produced corresponding to various kinds of subjects by the photographing system in the conventional manner is eliminated.
