A control device (10) fits in a towing vehicle (2) for controlling a surface-mounted unit's (SMU) (3) components (9). The SMU has data lines (17) for transmitting control data and power supply wires (16) for supplying power to the components. A coupling half (CH) (5) allocated to the towing vehicle forms a saddle plate and a CH allocated to the SMU forms a fifth-wheel king pin (6) adapted to it. An independent claim is also included for a surface-mounted unit for an articulated train with a fifth-wheel king pin.
