Inventory (402) is monitored by inputting, into a storage unit (200), information relating to a load supported by the storage unit (200). The storage unit (200) comprises a weight sensor (204) for sensing the weight of the load supported by the storage unit (200). The information relating to th e load supported by the storage unit, as well as information identifying the storage unit can then be obtained (104, 106, 108) from the storage unit. Inventory information relating to the load may be updated (114, 116, 118) based on the information obtained from the storage unit.
