FIELD: method and apparatus for making billets by continuous casting of metal. ^ SUBSTANCE: plant for metal continuous casting includes at least one apparatus for cooling billet. Said cooling apparatus is provided at least with stand for reducing billet by thickness. Billet subjected to reduction by thickness has solidified skin and liquid axial zone. Cooling process is tuned with use of temperature and solidification patterns in such a way that solidification interface between solidified envelope and liquid axial zone at inlet of billet into reduction stand corresponds to predetermined value of solidification interface between solidified envelope and liquid axial zone. ^ EFFECT: possibility for more gradual reduction at variable casting speed. ^ 10 cl, 3 dwg
