PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink residual quantity detection device which does not fail in formation of an image by incorporating an identification function of an ink cartridge in the ink residual quantity detection device and to provide an ink jet recorder. SOLUTION: The ink residual quantity detection device includes an identification means for identifying a type of the ink cartridge based on data from a detection means, and a judgment means for judging whether an amount of the ink in the ink cartridge is a reference quantity or more or not. The ink residual quantity detection device can detect an ink residual quantity and can identify a capacity of the ink cartridge, can predict the number of sheets to a recording medium which can be image formed, and can prevent an image formation fault, etc. from occurring due to shortage of the ink on the way of the image formation.
