PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid the disturbance of an image by a load fluctuation of an intermediate transfer member and a photoreceptor accompanying attaching and detaching of a transfer member and cleaning member to and from the intermediate transfer member for the purpose of a next print during optical writing of the previous print at the time of continuous printing, in a color image forming apparatus which obtains the color image by repeating a process of subjecting the photoreceptor to optical writing and the latent image thereof to toner development and transferring (primarily transferring) the toner image to the intermediate transfer member to obtain a superposed transfer image on the intermediate transfer member and simultaneously transferring (secondarily transferring) the superposed transfer image to transfer paper, and which has a transfer member disposed freely attachably and detachably to and from the intermediate transfer member for the purpose of secondary transfer and the cleaning member or the like disposed freely attachably and detachably to and from the intermediate transfer member. SOLUTION: The operation to attach and detach the transfer member and the cleaning member to and from the intermediate transfer member is performed at a timing at which the optical writing to the photoreceptor is not performed.
