Messages are exchanged between clients (104-106) and a server (101) at the start of an instant messaging application (IMA) on a user's presence. A message (201) is transmitted to the server with a request to start an IMA by a user. The server checks the entitlement of the user to start an IMA and calls up a user's profile to yield a configured user group.
