THERMAL RECORDING MEDIUM

A thermal recording medium produced by forming on a substrate an undercoat containing a pigment and a binder as the main components and a thermal recording layer containing as the main components a colorless or pale-colored basic dye and a developer capable of reacting with the dye to form a color, which is improved in image quality by incorporating a water-retaining agent into the undercoat and using as the pigment one exhibiting an oil absorption of 80 to 120 cc/100g (as determined by the method according to JIS K 5101) and by adjusting the coating fluid for the undercoat to a solid concentration of 25 to 45 % and a dynamic water retention (the amount of AA dewatering) of 350 g/m<2> or below.
