<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a counting system with an extremely small arithmetic load. <P>SOLUTION: This counting system 101 for counting the number of persons passing through a monitoring line 41 set in the lateral direction of a passage 4 comprises a laser 3 for emitting a slit beam 31 to the monitoring line 41 as an irradiation object, and an imaging device 1 for imaging an area 42 including the monitoring line 41. In the imaging device 1, one-dimensional data showing the position where the slit beam 31 is interrupted on the monitoring line 41 are generated from an image obtained by imaging. The passing number of persons is counted based on the one-dimensional data.
