In a process for the programme control of a machine, whereby one or more operations are performed during a predetermined portion or predetermined portions of a programme cycle, and wherein the duration of the or each operation is controlled by the state of two sensitive elements, each of which may assume a sensitized or a non sensitized state, the state of each of the sensitive elements is maintained unchanged during half of the programme cycle. Photo-sensitive resistors are disposed at selected positions such as N and Q adjacent apertures in a cylindrical member 1 containing an axially disposed lamp 3, and a screen 2 covering half the inner periphery of the cylinder 1 is rotatable to screen each photo-sensitive element from light from the lamp 3 for half of each programme cycle. Each photo-sensitive resistor 5 is connected in a circuit comprising transistors TR1, TR2, as illustrated in Fig.3. When a resistor 5 is activated by light from the lamp 3 an output signal appears at A and not at B, and when the resistor 5 is screened an output appears at B and not at A. Thus if it is desired to obtain a programme control signal for the duration of the movement of the rear edge 21 of the screen 2 between two photo-sensitive resistors at P and Q, signals are taken at the terminals B and A, respectively, of the two photo-sensitive resistor circuits at the points P and Q. These two signals are both zero during movement of the edge 21 between the points P and Q, and a NOR logic circuit connected to said terminals B and A will then provide the required output control signal.
