Drive unit and method for leak-testing the same

The gear drive unit and a method for verifying seal involves a gear housing and a driven wheel (18) on a shaft (14) fitted in an aperture in the gear housing. The shaft has at least one air channel (42) for pressure feed to the housing interior (40). The driven wheel has a shaft aperture (38), and the wheel is sealed against the shaft by a sealing ring (34). The air channel is so arranged that it is sealable with the sealing ring. The air channel is open to the shaft aperture over its entire length. The cross-section of the air channel is ring-segment-shaped. To verify seal, the gear housing is assembled, except the sealing ring. A sealing bell is pressed onto the driven shaft, the housing interior is pressurized and the system is checked for pressure drop. The sealing bell is then removed and the sealing ring is fitted.
