Process and apparatus for depositing books in a flat lying position

A compact handling system for a transfer station for book production has pairs of pressure plates (27a) on a carousel mount over the main feed (6) on which the books are moved at a cyclic rate in an upright position. The books are lifted by the grips and swung over the transport track and laid flat onto a second conveyor (8) to be moved to a subsequent process station, or to an intermediate store. The system does not increase the length of the handling system and retains the cyclic rate for the whole system. The books are securely gripped between pressure plates throughout the whole transfer process.
