A hand operated flat machine has needle selection made by a series of design plates 7 having serrated or slotted upper edges which when appropriately positioned beneath the shanks of the needles 2 retain the needle in an upper position in which their butts 3 engage the needle cams or permit the shanks to be deflected downwardly as the cam carriage traverses the needle bed. Retraction of the needles causes the end of the needle shank to ride up a projection 8 to reposition the needles for the next traverse of the carriage and selection of the needles. The plates 7 are adapted to be moved manually in a longitudinal direction which causes them to be partly elevated to a needle selecting position. Indicating means is provided coupled to the design plates which enables an operative to select a particular needle sequence and to observe the selection visually. This may take the form of a series of pointers registering on a scale or a pair of marked drums which can be rotated one within the other, their transparent nature premitting their markings to be visually observed. |
