An ultrasonic horn may traverse a web placed on an anvil having the protruberances thereon or the web and anvil may be moved past a stationary horn in a linear or circular path. Alternatively the horn may be cylindrical and rotatably mounted in a carriage for movement along the web such that the horn rolls on the web and vibrates axially so as to wipe the web surface.
