A cyanide-free zinc plating bath is described. Besides a zinc salt in the usual concentration range and possible brighteners, it comprises a polyhydroxy acid or salt and boric acid and/or borate in a molar ratio of between about 1(zinc):11/2(polyhydroxy):3(boric) and 1:2:4, depending on the zinc content of the solution.
