PRODUCTION OF POTASSIUM CHLORIDE FROM CARNALLITIC SALTS

Potassium chloride is produced from carnallitic salts consisting essentially of carnallite KCl.MgCl2.6H2O) and halite (NaCl). The salt is contacted with an aqueous medium to dissolve selectively the magnesium chloride, leaving a solid phase of KCl-NaCl mixture. This mixture is admixed with an amount of aqueous medium at least sufficient to dissolve substantially all of the NaCl and then the admixture is subjected to evaporation. The KCl will crystallize from the system and the crystals are washed to recover fertilizer grade KCl of at least 95 percent purity.
