[Also in Division C3] Iron or steel surfaces, e.g. vehicle bodies, are provided with weather resistant coatings by applying, e.g. by spraying a thixotropic, aqueous composition comprising a styrene/ butadiene/unsaturated carboxylic acid copolymer, an organic and/or inorganic thickener and an organic and/or inorganic fibrous material, e.g. to a thickness of 200 and 2000 microns. A primer coating may be applied to the metal before application of the composition. The copolymer preferably forms 30-50% wt. of the dried coating and may comprise 25-85% styrene, 10-65% butadiene and 1-5% of the unsaturated acid which is suitably an acid of 3-20 C atoms, e.g. acrylic methacrylic or maleic. The thickener may be an acrylic ester/acrylic acid system, bentonite or magnesium montmorillonite or silicate. The fibres may be of asbestos, polyamide, polyester or polyacrylonitrile and usually are less than 3 mm. long and from up to 30% of the coating. The composition may also include acrylates, acrylonitriles, alkyd or epoxy resins as well as pigments. The coatings may be stoved.</p> |
