1350399 Submerged arc welding flux SOUDOMETAL SA. 18 June 1971 [19 June 1970] 28809/71 Heading C7M A submerged arc welding flux is made by adding an aqueous alkali metal silicate solution having a viscosity of < 5 c. p. s. at 20‹C to a dry powdered flux mixture containing aluminous cement powder which contains a maximum of 20 wt. per cent SiO 2 , and drying the mixture to form a granulated flux with a maximum 10 wt. per cent SiO 2 . The mixture preferably contains 10-75 wt. per cent aluminous cement which contains 33-80% Al 2 O 3 and 20-45% CaO, 0-25% of at least one alkaline earth metal oxide, 0-10% SiO 2 , 0-20% at least one basic or amphoteric oxides, 5-15% at least one alkali metal and/ or alkaline earth metal and for aluminous fluorides and 0-30% alloying elements. The aqueous alkali metal silicate solution preferably has a molecular SiO 2 : alkali-metal ratio of 2À8: 4 and a viscosity of 1-10 c. p. s. The oxides in the flux may be MgO, MnO, FeO, K 2 O, Na 2 O, Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , ZrO 2 , the fluorides, CaF 2 , Na 3 AlF 6 or elpasolith NaK 2 AlF 6 ; the alloying elements Ni, Cr, Mn, Nb, Al. The flux is used for submerged arc welding or deposition of Ni Fe or Cu alloys containing oxidizable elements. |
