The extract is useful for oral or parenteral treatment of intestinal disorders, opt. with associated hepatic disorders, such as diarrhoea, cholecystitis, renal lithiasis, gout and pancreatitis. Dose is usually 2 g. daily for 10 days. The extract is not toxic to mice at 8 g/kg orally. In vitro, it is active against amoebae, Lamtha, Trichomonas and Chilomastix. In vivo, the extract has a sedative and analgesic action, is a general tonic and is active in the intestinal and urinary tracts.
