A process for producing hydrogen and oxides of carbon comprises reforming a hydrocarbon feed with steam at an elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst comprising elementary or combined nickel, a refractory material and an alkaline compound, the steam to hydrocarbon ratio being at least sufficient substantially to prevent deposition of carbon on the catalyst. The hydrocarbon may be naphtha or some other liquid hydrocarbon feedstock; it may contain olefines and/or sulphur and may be reformed between 600 DEG and 1000 DEG F. at a pressure between 0 and 1000 p.s.i.g. Examples given compare the utility of conventional and novel catalysts for steam reformation of heptane, ethylene-ethane, and propylene-propane mixtures.
