An anvil for use in lockbolt swaging comprises a throat for receiving and swaging the collar 12, which throat is provided with an abutment 27 spaced from the throat mouth for preventing the swaged collar 12 from entering completely into the throat. The anvil is thereby spaced from the sheets 26 being joined so that the latter are prevented from being deformed. The bolt stem is gripped by collet jaws 22 received within an inner tube 24 which is secured to a pulling member of an hydraulic tool. When the tool is actuated, the inner tube 24 is retracted and the anvil throat passed down over the collar 12 which is swaged into the locking grooves 15 on the bolt stem. In another embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown), the throat has a tapered portion (133) and a cylindrical portion (134). The lower end of the inner tube 24 is provided with an ejector nose (141) operable on the return stroke of the tool. The anvil has an annular end face (120a). |
