The stopper (1) comprises an elastic body (12) with a tapered upper part which increases with size towards the top end and containing a central axial bore (122). A rod-shaped plug (11) inserted in the bore can be moved vertically between a first position in order to expand the elastic body so that it is secured tightly inside the mouth of the container and a second position in which the elastic body can be released from the inside the mouth of the container. The rod has a cone (115) its bottom end and a tapered shaft extending upwards from the narrow top end of the cone. The rod decreases in size in the direction away from the cone.
