PURPOSE: To provide an apparatus and method for safely controlling a molten salt electrolytic cell from melting of the bath to the state that is capable of starting electrolysis in the molten salt electrolytic cell. CONSTITUTION: In an apparatus for controlling a molten salt electrolytic cell(1), wherein the molten electrolytic bath is in the automatically electrolytical state by melting a solid phase electrolytic bath(2) contained in the electrolytic cell, the apparatus for controlling a molten salt electrolytic cell comprises a detecting means for detecting the state change of the electrolytic cell by detectors installed at the electrolytic cell; and an adjusting means for adjusting the liquid surface of an electrolytic bath to the electrolytical state after performing a detecting process by the detecting means, wherein the apparatus further comprises a checking means for checking completion of melting of the electrolytic bath, wherein the detecting means comprises one or more detectors(33) selected from detectors for detecting electrical resistance change of the electrolytic bath, pressure detectors(7,8) and temperature detector(11), and wherein the detectors for detecting electrical resistance change of the electrolytic bath are detectors consisted of a conduction type detecting sensor inserted into the electrolytic bath and an alternating current type conduction detector.
