PURPOSE: A WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) system and an alarm generation suppressing and laser cut off method therefor are provided to cut off a laser of an optical amplifier located in an optical repeater having a failure by using a maintenance signal, thereby suppressing unnecessary alarm generation and cutting off an unnecessary laser operation. CONSTITUTION: A failure detector(2371) detects whether each optical signal receiving channel has a failure. A maintenance signal inserter(2372) inserts a maintenance signal into a lower optical link device and an upper optical link device when a failure is detected from the channels. A maintenance signal detector(2382) detects the maintenance signal from the upper or the lower optical link device. An alarm suppresser(2386) inactivates a failure alarm generated in the lower optical link device in response to the detected maintenance signal. A laser cut off unit(2376) cuts off a laser of an optical amplifier connected to a front end of the optical link device where the failure is detected, in response to the maintenance signal.
