The gripper (1) consists of a flexible plate (2) with a slit (4) that allows two sections (24, 25) to be located on either side of an object (18) and grip it. A variant of the design has two parallel slits forming three sections - one going on one side of the gripped object and the other two on the opposite side. The facing surfaces of the two (or three) sections can have embossed studs (22) or grooves to provide a grip.
