PURPOSE: Provided is a pharmaceutical composition comprising the extract of a root of the balloon-flower. The composition is useful for preventing and treating degenerative brain disease or for the enhancement of memory. The composition increases cholinergic neurotransmitter activity and simultaneously prevents nerve cells from the damage. CONSTITUTION: The pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating degenerative brain disease is characterized by containing the extract of a root of the balloon-flower, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The extract is obtained by adding 5-15 times of water to powder of a root of the balloon-flower, followed by heating at 80-100 deg.C for 1-24 hours and filtration.
