1,260,509. Shaft seals. CARL FREUDENBERG. 10 April, 1969 [10 April, 1968], No. 18338/68. Heading F2B. [Also in Division C5] The sealing surfaces of a lip-type shaft seal are kept free of deposits produced by additives contained in a lubricant sealed by the ring by supplying a mixture of lubricating substances which prevents and/or dissolves such deposits to the side of the sealing surfaces remote from the lubricant. The mixture may comprise petroleum-derived or synthetic hydrocarbons and additionally contain soaps, silicates, inorganic gel-formers, compounds of thiophosphoric acid or other dispersants and detergents. One example comprises by weight-petroleum hydrocarbons 43%, soaps of barium 35%, zinc-containing thiophosphoric acid compounds 13À5%, montmorillonite 8% and solution promoter, e.g. acetone, 0À5%. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, a sealing ring 3 located in a housing 2 has sealing lips 4 engaging a shaft 1 and the deposit-dissolving mixture fills the space 6 between the lips. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the mixture fills the space (7) between the sealing lips (4) of two axiallyspaced rings (3). |
