Intensive, controlled production of red algae on land, for use as a source of antimicrobial compounds, comprises growing the tetrasporophytic form in culture medium containing sea water

Intensive and controlled production, on land, of red algae (A) of the family Bonnemaisoniaceae comprises: (a) suspending the tetrasporophytic form of (A) in a culture medium containing sea water; (b) culturing, with agitation, at 10-29 [deg]C with renewal of medium; and (c) harvesting the tetrasporophytic form. ACTIVITY : Antiseborrheic; Dermatological; Antibacterial; Antifungal. A propylene glycol extract of Falkenbergia rufalonosa was diluted 1:10 with water then inoculated with 105> - 107> cells/g of various bacteria. After 24 hours, the reduction in cell count was over 3 log for Staphylococcus epidermidis and over 4 log for Pityrosporum ovale, Propionibacterium acnes and S. aureus.
