PURPOSE: Provided are the extract of Sambucus williamsii var. coreana Nakai, Sambucus sieboldiana var. pendula(Nakai.)T. Lee, and Sambucus sieboldiana Blume which inhibits activity of cathepsin K and a method for extracting the same. Also, provided is a composition containing the extract as an active ingredient. CONSTITUTION: The extract having inhibiting effect on the activity of cathepsin K is obtained by extracting one or two of Sambucus williamsii var. coreana Nakai, Sambucus sieboldiana var. pendula(Nakai.)T. Lee, and Sambucus sieboldiana Blume. The composition of functional foods or drugs for prevention and treatment of osteoporosis is characterized by containing the extract as an active ingredient. The extract is obtained by adding distilled water to one or two of Sambucus williamsii var. coreana Nakai, Sambucus sieboldiana var. pendula(Nakai.)T. Lee, and Sambucus sieboldiana Blume, followed by heating to 80-100 deg.C; centrifuging the heated solution to give supernatant; and freeze-drying the supernatant.
