PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a refrigerator capable of restricting foaming of cooling medium at the time of starting, and preventing refrigeration delay in starting the refrigerator using cooling medium of hydrocarbon. SOLUTION: This refrigerator is provided with a compressor 2 containing an electric element 8 and a compression element 9, a control means 6 to drive-control the electric element 8, and an outside air temperature detecting means 13 to detect peripheral temperature of the refrigerator 1. The cooling medium mainly comprises hydrocarbon. When the compressor 2 is started, rotation speed for rotation at lower speed than normal rotation is varied in accordance with outside air temperature by the outside air temperature detecting means 13. In starting the compressor, quantity of cooling medium sucked within unit time is limited, so that pressure fall in a closed container is gentle. Consequently, cooling medium stagnant in oil is gradually released from the oil, and sudden foaming phenomenon is avoided. Especially, foaming phenomenon can be restricted at the optimum rotation speed, while quantity of stagnation is varied in accordance with outside air temperature. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
