A network is described having network devices and network connections. Communication on the network takes place in a calibration phase and an operating phase. In the calibration phase, each network device emits a calibration message that includes at least one predetermined training signal. The other network devices each receive the message and compare it with the predetermined training signal. Reception parameters are determined from this and are stored in such a way as to be assigned to the transmitting network device. In the operating phase, the stored reception parameters are used to process received signals from another network device in such a way that channel distortion is reduced. Further embodiments relate to the use of a digital filter having settable filter coefficients, a calibration validity period that can be adapted as a function of errors that occur in the data transmission in the operating phase, and the transmission of parameter messages having reception parameters included in them.
