<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane separation device whereby damaged hollow fibers can be specified during a water circulating operation. <P>SOLUTION: Bubbles are mixed into raw water using an ejector 18 to let water to circulate through the membrane separation device. When a hollow fiber membrane 4 is damaged, bubbles enter into the hollow fiber membrane 4 and flow out from an opening 4a on the upper end to a permeation room 14. Bubbles coming out from the opening 4a are detected from images taken by a CCD camera 24.
