An antidiabetic dietetic nutritional supplement (I) comprising processed Hibiscusspec. plant material, is new. Independent claims are also included for: (1) processed material from Hibiscusspec. plants, provided in unit packaging with indication of suitability for therapy of diabetes diseases; and (2) the unit packaging containing the processed plant material. ACTIVITY : Antidiabetic. Typically a type-2 diabetes patient, previously treated with the insulin analog novorapid, was treated 5 times daily (approximately 30 minutes before meal times) with 200 ml of an aqueous preparation obtained by extracting 10 g of chopped, fresh okra ( Hibiscus esculentus) with 400 ml of boiling water. Blood sugar levels were determined at various times during the day (especially before and after meals), and fluctuated in the acceptable range of 90-120 mg/dl. The injection of insulin (or analogs) was therefore unnecessary. MECHANISM OF ACTION : Endogenous insulin secretion stimulant.
