<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an olefin dimerization catalyst and an olefin dimerization method using the catalyst. <P>SOLUTION: The olefin dimerization catalyst comprises a compound having cyclopentadienyl ring, a chromium compound and an organic aluminum compound. In the olefin dimerization catalyst, the compound having cyclopentadienyl ring is a compound expressed by formula (1). In formula (1), A denotes an element of group 14, B denotes allyl group and R<SP>1</SP>-R<SP>4</SP>denote each hydrogen, a halogen atom, alkyl group, aryl group, aralkyl group, silyl group, alkoxy group, aryloxy group, aralkyloxy group, silyloxy group, amino group, phosphino group or thio group.
