<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which degradation of image quality is suppressed and a cleaning device suitable for such an image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The cleaning device for removing residual toner remaining on the surface of an image carrier after transfer of a toner image on the surface of the image carrier to a transfer medium comprises a brush to which bias for electrostatically recovering the residual toner remaining on the surface of the image carrier is applied, a roller which is disposed in contact with the brush and to which bias for electrostatically recovering the residual toner is applied, an image density detecting means to detect the image density of an image represented by image information, and a bias controller which controls bias so that the residual toner recovered by the brush is recovered by the roller when the image density detected by the image density detecting means is higher than a prescribed density, and controls bias so that the residual toner recovered by the brush is prevented from being recovered by the roller when the image density is lower than the prescribed density. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
