<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent poor erasing from being caused by the low following property of driving response to a temperature change from a medium, which is caused by temperature, thickness, the kind of specific heat of a material, etc. in the use of a recording/erasing medium. <P>SOLUTION: In a rewritable thermal printer using the thermal recording/erasing medium rewritable and erasable by heat, a linear thick-film electric resistor as a linear heating element is used as a contact-heating head for the erasing of the thermal recording/erasing medium. So that a fixed amount of heat can be imparted to the recording/erasing medium in a temperature range required for heating and erasing, electric resistance of the linear heating element is detected as-is in terms of a temperature which is brought into contact with the medium carried for erasing; conversion into the temperature is performed according to a temperature coefficient; and the temperature of the linear heating element is followed and controlled in such a manner that driving time is simultaneously controlled in real time.
