PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve stable extraction of an image area of interest and reproduction of images by optimizing by means of image brightness a determination on chromaticity ratio used in the extraction of an image area of interest; and to obtain information on proper correction in the case of blurred images such as images of faces. SOLUTION: Image extraction (S5601, S5602) for extracting an image area of interest from an inputted image extracts continuous blocks of a predetermined chromaticity range from the inputted image. Based on the average value of the spatial frequencies of the continuous blocks, a determination is made as to whether or not the blocks are used as an image area of interest. The predetermined chromaticity range is set based on the brightness value of the inputted image. Through image reproduction that reproduces an image by decoding compressed and encoded image data, the image area of interest is extracted using the above method, and then feature parts are extracted from the image area of interest (S5604, S5605). The feature parts extracted are deblurred (S5606). The image area of interet is corrected to desired values (S5608) to reproduce an image. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
