PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an iron based sintered alloy which has high surface denseness and surface hardness, and to provide its production method. SOLUTION: In the iron based sintered alloy having high surface denseness and surface hardness, the average value of the concentration of P in the surface layer part having a thickness in the range of 1μm to 2 mm from the surface is higher than that at the inside present more inward than the surface layer part by 0.01 to 1 mass%, and also, the surface layer part comprises K and/or Na in 0.0001 to 1 mass% by the average concentration.
