Insulators and coils are made and subsequently inserted in a slotted structure, e.g. a stator 5, by forming a number of insulators and placing them in an insulator receiving mechanism; transferring the insulators from the mechanism into guide apertures of an inserting assembly; winding coil turns at a turn forming station III; and transporting the assembly to a distributing station II where the insulators and coil turns are inserted into the core slots. The apparatus is automatic, the various operations being controlled by a tape reader 127. Insulator forming station I.-Strip insulating material 12, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, paper or the like, is fed from a reel over pulleys 16, 28, 22, 40 and past a supply switch (23), Fig. 1 (not shown), and a fault detecting assembly 24, to an insulator forming assembly 50. A motor-driven cam 90 moves a lever 60 pivotally and as the end of the lever moves downwardly it drives the strip 12 by a predetermined amount past severing means the pivot point 74 is movable between two locations so that insulation of two different lengths may be cut, Fig. 2 (not shown). On the downward stroke of the linkage, a pawl 150 moving therewith grips the strip and on the return stroke, a stationary pawl prevents it moving upwardly. A track in the cam 90 reciprocates a slide 114, which actuates the severing means and simultaneously drives a punch (240) to force the severed length of insulation into a slot in a magazine (220) thereby forming a slot wedge, Fig. 5 (not shown). The cam then actuates a pawl 214 and ratchet plate 212 to rotate the magazine to align the next slot with the punch (290). When the required number of insulators has been made, the magazine and coil accommodating means are brought into telescoping relationship and pushers insert the insulators into slots in the latter. Insulator and coil distributing station II and turn-forming station III.-The coil accommodating means are mounted on a turntable 8, which conveys the means alternately to station II and station III. Hence insulators are made and then inserted while the coil turns are simultaneously wound at the other station. The insulator and coil-accommodating means and the coil winding apparatus are described in Specifications 1,270,861 and 1,270,290, respectively. The core handling station IV.-A stator 5 is placed in a holder 518 and when a work cycle is started an hydraulic cylinder 514 is driven downwardly thereby pulling a shaft 520 with it. A fixed follower 526 engaged in a cam slot 524 rotates the shaft 520 through 90 degrees to align the stator with the accommodating means and with the assembly 50. When the insulators have all been formed, frame 580 is lowered to bring the assembly 50 into telescopic relationship with the coil accommodating means. Alternative embodiment.-The core handling station includes a conveyer 920, on which a core is loaded at a position A. It is then taken to a position C where the coils and slot insulators are positioned therein as in the first embodiment to provide a first phase winding. At a position E, the ends of the coils are clamped in terminals, which are operated by air cylinders 968-971, and a copper member 982 having peripheral insulation is located in the stator bore. An electric pulse is passed through the coil to effect press-back thereof. Alternatively the coils may be short-circuited and the pulse generated by inductive coupling with the member 982. After press-back the core is taken to position G to receive the second phase winding. The operations are performed concurrently at positions A, C, G.
