A control for a change-speed transmission 8, on a motor-vehicle or other machine, driven by the working turbine 5 of a gas turbine set, is such that, during a manual shift, by a selector lever acting on a keyboard 22, turbine torque is reduced to zero by controlling at 14, through the usual accelerator pedal 11, the incidence of guide-vanes 4, fixed or rotating, between the working turbine 5 and compressor 1, permitting the superseded ratio to be disengaged, the shift to the new ratio being delayed until the speed of the turbine 5 is adjusted to synchronism by acting on the accelerator 11, and detected by a comparison signal from gear input and output speed sensors 25, 26, which prevents gear engagement until synchronism. The necessity for a separating clutch between the working turbine 5 and transmission 8 is thereby avoided. Turbine output torque is sensed at 24 as by axial thrust on a helical gear-wheel. The signals 24, 25, 26 are fed to a secondary control 23, signalling a primary control 12, which actuates the fuel control 13 and vane incidence control 14, in response also to signals 15, 20 representing inlet temperature and output pressure of the compressor 1 and gas-generator turbine 2, control pressure (18), gas generator and working turbine speeds, position of the accelerator pedal 11 and service brake 21. To start the vehicle the speed of the working turbine 5 is adjusted to zero by the vane control 14, to permit establishment of a gear from neutral, and subsequent start by accelerating the turbine. |
