<p>1,205,256. Controlled reaction of metal and liquid. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 15 Dec., 1967 [15 Dec., 1966], No. 57194/67. Heading C1A. Sodium, potassium or lithium, or alloys thereof, or calcium, are reacted by contacting with an aqueous liquid which is dispersed in a continuous liquid phase which does not react with either the metal or aqueous liquid. The dispersion preferably contains between 1% and 50% by volume of the aqueous liquid. The non-reactive liquid is preferably a hydrocarbon oil and the aqueous liquid may be water or an aqueous solution of an acid, base, alcohol or hydrogen cyanide, or a mixture of such compounds. The reaction is preferably carried out at a temperature of between 0‹ and 100‹ C. The rate of reaction is controlled by adjusting the temperature of the liquid mixture or by adjusting the ratio of aqueous liquid to the non- reactive liquid. In order to prevent explosive mixtures of hydrogen and oxygen forming on the surface of the liquid mixture, the surface may be swept with air. Examples describe the application of the process to the disposal of sodium from sodium filled plastic tubes of the type used for electrical conduction, the disposal of sodium and calcium on metal surfaces resulting from alloy coating processes, the disposal of sodium sludge filter resulting from the manufacture of sodium by electrolysis of molten sodium chloride, and in cleaning heat exchange media such as sodium-cooled reactors.</p> |
