<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-quality recording liquid excellent in image conservation stability such as return discharge stability, printed article light resistance, and gas resistance. <P>SOLUTION: The recording liquid comprises water, a coloring material, and a water-soluble organic solvent, and further contains organic sulfur compounds described by formula (a): R<SP>1</SP>-(S-R<SP>2</SP>)<SB>x</SB>-R<SP>3</SP>and/or formula (b): R<SP>4</SP>-(S)<SB>y</SB>-R<SP>5</SP>. In the formulas, R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>4</SP>, and R<SP>5</SP>are each independently an alkyl group replaceable with a hydrophilic group, an aryl group replaceable with a hydrophilic group, or an aralkyl group replaceable with a hydrophilic group. R<SP>3</SP>is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group replaceable with a hydrophilic group, an aryl group replaceable with a hydrophilic group, or an aralkyl group replaceable with a hydrophilic group. R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>, and R<SP>4</SP>and R<SP>5</SP>, may get together and form a ring, respectively. In the case where y is 2, however, neither R<SP>4</SP>nor R<SP>5</SP>is a 2-hydroxyethyl group. R<SP>2</SP>is an alkylene group replaceable with a hydrophilic group.
