PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a fatty acid alkyl ester, by which the highly pure fatty acid alkyl ester that has the extremely low contents of fatty acid soaps and residual catalysts and can be used as a Diesel fuel hardly causing the troubles of engines can be produced at a low production cost in simple production processes, while reducing loads on environments due to washing drains. SOLUTION: This method for producing the fatty acid alkyl ester 20 from the reaction product obtained by the transesterification reaction of a mixture of oils or fats 1, an alcohol 2 and an alkali catalyst 3 is characterized by adding one or more acids 4 selected from the group consisting of phosphoric acid, phosphorous acid, hypophosphoric acid, hypophosphorous acid, pyrophosphoric acid, metaphosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, pyrosulfuric acid, carbon dioxide, hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, and oxalic acid to the reaction product to give pH 3.0 to 7.5, subjecting the reaction product to a phase separation into a heavy liquid g and a light liquid 12, and then taking out the light liquid 12.
