PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease the influences of a dispersant in the manufacture of toner in an aqueous medium or of a compound used for polyaddition reaction on the electrification properties of the toner to obtain required electrification characteristics. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing toner by emulsifying, suspending or aggregating an oil phase in an aqueous medium to produce toner, a surfactant having polarity different from that of the polar group on the toner surface is added after the emulsification, suspension or aggregation dispersion process. If the polar group on the toner surface is an acidic group, a cationic surfactant, a nonionic surfactant or an amphoteric surfactant is used as the surfactant having different polarity. If the polar group on the toner surface is a basic group, an anionic surfactant, a nonionic surfactant or an amphoteric surfactant is used as the surfactant having different polarity.
