PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of reading the image of a document without interrupting the image reading of the document temporarily or without requiring complex control of reading speed when a document having image data exceeding the storage capacity of a temporary storage memory is read out. SOLUTION: The image reader comprises an image reading means for reading the image of a document while moving the reading position relatively to the document in the subscanning direction and outputting image data, a means for storing the image data temporarily, and a reading control means for making a decision whether split reading for splitting the document area to be read out into a plurality of subreading areas in the main scanning direction before reading of the document is started and reading the image of each subreading area continuously is required or not based on the reading conditions of the document and controlling the image reading means to perform split reading if it is required. An image forming means for synthesizing image data of each subreading area from the temporary storage means to form the entire image data of the document is also provided.
