PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To learn unevenness in detection of a lift amount sensor on the maximum lift side in an engine provided with a variable valve system for changing valve lift amount while preventing deterioration, failure, and increase in electric power consumption of the variable valve system. SOLUTION: When the maximum lift amount is demanded, the variable valve system is feedback-controlled based on sensor output until a time when exceeding predetermined lift amount. When exceeding the predetermined lift amount, a condition in which it is pressed against a stopper on the maximum lift side by a fixed control signal is held. When a condition in which the lift amount detected by the sensor at this time is larger than a learned value until a previous time continues for a predetermined period of time, sensor output at the time is learned as a value equivalent to the maximum lift.
