PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for sterilizing water by a metal ion, which is made compact and simplified so that this apparatus is used in domestic washing equipment such as a washing machine, the installation of which is facilitated and the maintenance of which is facilitated and made inexpensive. SOLUTION: This compact apparatus 10 for sterilizing water by the metal ion is provided with one bar-like electrode 15 which is formed into a shape enough to be put in a columnar space and arranged in the center of the columnar space, a chamber 11 which is provided with a thin sheet-shaped electrode 18 to be arranged to surround the electrode 15 and used for generating the metal ion and another chamber 12 for housing a circuit 24 for supplying the electric power necessary to the electrodes 15 and 18. A water supplying port 20 for supplying water to the chamber 11 through a water supplying route is formed at the biased position in the right or left direction of the central axis V of the chamber 11 in the vertical direction.
