PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogen production method and apparatus which reduce energy loss and enable small-scale hydrogen production from digestion gas at low costs of operation and equipment. SOLUTION: The hydrogen production apparatus has a reaction chamber of a reactor 20 which contains a mixed gas of the digestion gas and steam, a digestion gas feeder 30 which feeds the digestion gas to the reaction chamber and a shock wave generator 40 which intermittently feeds high-pressure steam to the reaction chamber and generates shock wave of the high-pressure steam in the reaction chamber. The shock wave generator 40 transmits the shock wave to the reaction chamber, heats the mixed gas of the digestion gas and steam in the reaction chamber through shock compression and reacts methane and the steam in the mixed gas to generate a hydrogen-containing gas.
